Recently Beyonce Knowles's new "Fatal Attraction"-style thriller 'Obsessed' easily took the crown at the weekend box office in North America. Obsessed is selling an estimated US $28.5 million worth of tickets, its distributor said. The movie cost about US$20 million to make, and industry observers were forecasting an opening in the mid-teen millions, said Screen Gems, the low-budget division of Sony Corp's Columbia Pictures. The film has two co-stars Idris Elba and Ali Larter.
Knowles, the former Destiny's Child frontwoman who recently played blues-woman Etta James in Cadillac Records, stars in Obsessed as a woman who fights to save her marriage when a pretty office temp (Ali Larter) falls hard for her husband (Idris Elba).
“We have never been in this strong a position heading into the summer season, ever,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.
Well, at least this shitty economy is good for something. Nobody has the cash to travel or shop, so we’re all going to the movies. Although for what it costs to take a family of four to the movies these days, you can probably get a round-trip plane ticket to Hollywood on Priceline.
